Pretoria - Six girls and one boy from Vuwani went to work with Communications Minister Faith Muthambi on Thursday.
This was part of the Take a Girl Child to Work Day campaign, which gives young women a glimpse of the working world.
“These learners want to have a full grasp of our mandate as the Department of Communications and our intention to provide universal access to information and communications,” said Minister Muthambi.
The 2016 Take a Girl Child to Work Day takes place in a year when South Africa is celebrating the 60th Anniversary of the 1956 Women’s March to the Union Buildings to protest against the extension of pass laws to women.
Minister Muthambi also took the learners to The New Age business briefing in Johannesburg, where one of the learners made a direct plea to those involved in the vandalism of schools to halt all destructive forms of protest so learners can go back to school.
“We plead with community members to stop burning our schools. They are destroying our future,” said the learners.
As part of ongoing work by the Inter-Ministerial Committee set up to return Vuwani and surrounding areas to normality, Minister Muthambi has led a series of community information sessions, in partnership with civil society and traditional leadership, in an effort to drive the back-to-school campaign in the area. – SAnews.gov.za
