Pretoria - Communications Minister Faith Muthambi has strongly condemned the mugging of South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) contributing editor, Vuyo Mvoko, and his crew.
Mvoko was robbed on camera on Tuesday night while preparing for a live crossing for the arrival of Zambian President Edgar Lungu outside Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg.
“This incident and other similar criminal activities that occur across the country impact negatively on individuals and society as a whole as well as the developmental efforts of South Africa.
“We strongly condemn this criminal activity, which also poses a threat to the lives of our journalists. As government, we condemn any form of attacks on journalists in our country.
“We urge the law enforcement agencies to speed up their investigation so that those perpetrators can be brought to justice,” the Minister said.
Minster Muthambi said government has intensified the fight against crime to protect the rights of citizens as enshrined in the Constitution and will continue in its efforts to reduce crime to ensure that all people who live in South Africa are and feel safe.
“Citizens are encouraged to work closely with law enforcement agencies to reduce crime levels in our communities.
“Recent reports on the work of government in clamping down on criminal activities with the help of the public are a clear demonstration that together we contribute towards moving South Africa forward,” said Minister Muthambi. - SAnews.gov.za
