Minister Cele takes crime imbizo to TUT

Thursday, May 10, 2018

Police Minister Bheki Cele will on Friday host a social crime prevention imbizo at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) in Soshanguve.

The imbizo follows an invitation by the students who raised serious complaints with the Minister about crime incidences that have turned the campus into a mini war zone with multiple cases of women abuse on the rise.

The latest attack was last week when a first-year student was overpowered in a toilet and almost raped.

Reports indicate that her would-be rapist allegedly slapped her in the face and stabbed her in the tongue to silence her screams. He was caught by a security guard and was arrested.

Ministry spokesperson Nonkululeko Phokane said hosting the imbizo is in line with the Minister’s pre-budget vote activities, which is aimed at intensifying the fight against women and child abuse under the theme “Taking a firm stand for the safety of women and children”.

“The scourge of women abuse is at its highest peak in the country. Hence the Minister’s dedicated focus in ensuring that such crimes are brought to its knees.”

Phokane said the Minister is expected to engage with the students on matters that are affecting the campus life and further introduce intervention measures that will arrest all forms of crimes on campus and in the surrounding areas. - SAnews.gov.za
