Thursday, November 6, 2014

Pretoria – The Portfolio Committee on Labour is to conduct public hearings on the national minimum wage in the Western Cape this weekend.

The Parliamentary process follows President Jacob Zuma’s request during the 2014 State of the National Address that modalities of implementing a national minimum wage be investigated.

Chairperson of the Committee, Lumka Yengen, says Parliament will afford every South African an opportunity to be heard on the matter.

Earlier this week, Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa announced members of a task team that will be looking into remuneration issues in the various sectors.

The task team was announced at the Labour Relations Indaba at Emperors Palace in Ekurhuleni.

The task team comprises of representatives from the community, business, government and labour.

The Labour Relation Indaba discussed among others, issues pertaining to the implementation of the national minimum wage and income inequality as well as the root causes of South Africa’s prevailing labour relations environment.

Various stakeholders, including the executive mayors, domestic workers, farm workers and union representatives from around the Western Cape have been invited to the public hearings. – SAnews.gov.za
