Pretoria - Hundreds of men in KwaZulu-Natal showed their support for the fight against the abuse of women and children by taking part in a men's march on Friday.

Provincial Health MEC, Sibongiseni Dhlomo, led the men's march at Nseleni Sports Ground in the uThungulu District to mark the 16 Days of Activism for no Violence Against Women and Children.

The march was organised by the district to encourage and remind men, in particular, and all community sectors that they have an important role to play in reducing crime and violence against women and children.

"Our girls continue to be raped, sexually abused, sexually harassed, and assaulted at school by male classmates and teachers, for many women and girls, violence and abuse are an inevitable part of their social environment," said Dhlomo.

The district is largely rural with a great adherence to traditional customs and traditions.

Dr Dhlomo stressed the need for government and community groups to take joint action to curb violence against women, adding that the government message calls for decisive leadership as efforts to root out crime and violence, of any form are being stepped up.

"We will only succeed in rooting out crime and related social ills if we start in each and every household, every street and every ward," Dr Dhlomo said, noting that for this to success, it requires decisive leadership from all sectors of society.
