Meeting to discuss progress in achieving MDGs

Pretoria - The achievement of the health-related Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) will be in the spotlight during the 63rd World Health Assembly meeting to be held in Geneva.

Taking place under the theme, "The Commonwealth and Health MDGs by 2015, this year's five-day meeting, which kicks-off on Monday, includes a long and complex list of health challenges and responses to review.

The strengthening of governments' capacity to constructively engage the private sector in providing essential health services and pandemic influenza preparedness will be among the issues that will be discussed.

The meeting will also discuss public health, innovation and intellectual property, international recruitment of health personnel, strategies to reduce harmful use of alcohol as well as counterfeit medical products.

The meeting will be attended by health ministers across the world, including South Africa's Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi who is accompanied by some of the department's senior officials who are responsible for key areas that will be discussed at the meeting.

Motsoaledi is expected to focus on TB control and blood safety.

On Sunday, Motsoaledi joined other ministers in the Annual Commonwealth Health Ministers Meeting to discuss progress made towards the attainment of the MDGs.
