Media allowed into Terre'Blanche trial

Pretoria - A limited number of journalists and members of the public will be allowed to witness proceedings in the Eugene Terre'Blanche murder trial in Ventersdorp.

This comes after a ruling by Judge Joseph Raulinga of the North Gauteng High Court to let 14 journalists, four relatives of the deceased and 16 members of the general public to hear the minor accused's testimony via closed circuit television in a separate room.

"(This) satisfies the need to balance the interests of the child and that of the exceptional public interest in the sensational case," said the SA National Editors' Forum on Thursday.

Terre'Blanche, the leader of the right wing Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging (AWB), was bludgeoned to death on his North West farm in April, allegedly by two employees, one of them being a minor.

Last month, the right wing group was demanding a court order allowing the Terre'Blanche family and the AWB leadership to witness the proceedings of the trial.

As a result, media groups challenged the ring wing decision by seeking a court order to allow journalist to cover the trial.

The hearing is set for May next year.
