MEC slams report on Tambo Memorial Hospital

Pretoria - Gauteng MEC for Health and Social Development, Qedani Mahlangu, said the statement made on the missing patient's fees at Tambo Memorial Hospital in Ekurhuleni was mischievous and misleading.

According to claims reported to the media, it was discovered that some of the missing receipt books were used and monies collected were not deposited by the main cashier. This included more than R150 000 being stolen by unauthorised use of 14 receipt books.

Mahlangu said that she finds it odd and astounding that the claims have been made to the media pre-empting the outcome of the investigation, while the matter - which was referred for investigation to the Gauteng Shared Service Centre Security Risk Management Department - has not yet determine how much was stolen.

"It is only fair to allow the forensic investigation to run its course, where after appropriate action will be taken," Mahlangu said.

She also reiterated the department's commitment to rooting out corruption as it impacts negatively on service delivery.

"We will not hesitate to deal with individuals who engage in corrupt activities within and outside the department."
