Gauteng MEC for Education Panyaza Lesufi visited Bryneven Primary School in Bryanston, north of Johannesburg, on Tuesday following allegations of corruption, fraud and nepotism against the principal.
He met with the school’s parents, school governing body (SGB), school management team (SMT) and educators. This after parents protested at the school on Tuesday morning.
“It is concerning to note that about 14 educators resigned within a period of 12 months, citing victimisation by the principal. Parents complained about a Grade 2 educator who is not proficient in teaching Afrikaans. There are also allegations of mismanagement of funds levelled against the principal,” said the MEC in a statement at the end of the visit.
The department has appointed an independent firm to conduct an audit of financial records for the past three years. The results are expected early next year and same will assist the department in determining action to be taken.
MEC Lesufi said employees assigned to support the school have failed the department and must all be charged accordingly.
At the meeting it was decided that all SMT members, including the principal, will be served with correspondences seeking reasons why they must not be suspended; the Head of Department will write to the SGB for them to provide reasons why they should not be dissolved and all educators who resigned will be persuaded to come back to the school.
Also, it was decided that the Grade 2 Afrikaans educator will be replaced immediately. – SAnews.gov.za
