Pretoria - Gauteng Health MEC Hope Papo has condemned all incidents of theft and sabotage at the province’s health facilities.

This follows a break-in incident at Kalafong Provincial Tertiary Hospital in the early hours of Sunday, in what is suspected to be acts of organised crime and sabotage at the hospital.

Three offices, including the main cashier, Quality Assurance and Information Technology offices, were broken into. The perpetrators broke into the strong room and stole cash, a cheque book and face value documents as well as computers, hard drives and memory sticks from other offices.

Papo noted that in recent times, the hospital has also experienced similar incidents of theft of flushmasters, toilet seats and taps in most public areas leading to serious inconvenience to users.

He challenged members of the community to take ownership of health facilities in their respective communities.

“Communities should protect health facilities and report any form of vandalism and suspected acts of theft and criminality to the Hospital Boards and the police,” said Papo.

The incident has been reported to the police for investigation. Papo said the department will in the meantime work closely with the hospital management to intensify security measures to prevent further incidents of a similar nature. – SAnews.gov.za
