Pretoria - Grade 12 learners have been warned to exercise caution when celebrating during and after exams.
Western Cape Basic Education MEC Donald Grant said a repeat of last year's events should be avoided at all costs.
"I would like to ask our learners to remain safe during this time. In November, seven of our young learners lost their lives in road accidents in just six days. Another two learners died in early December. Five of these learners were in grade 12," said the MEC.
Learners attend what is commonly known as "matric rage" parties. Grant warned them to drive carefully.
"Celebrate responsibly... Be vigilant of other vehicles and pedestrians, ensure that you buckle up and drive responsibly."
He commended the grade 12s for having endured a difficult year and wished them the best for the exams, which commence on 25 October.
"Good luck and best wishes. I trust you will achieve the results you have worked so hard for," said Grant, adding that matrics should stay focused until the last paper is written.
