Matrics urged to apply for IDs

Pretoria - The matric class of 2011 have been urged to apply for their IDs well ahead of their final examinations at the end of the year to avoid the last minute rush.

"Part of your preparations for your final examinations later this year is for you to ensure you are in possession of a green bar coded identity document. I urge you to apply for your IDs, should you not have one already, as soon as possible at your closest Home Affairs office," said Home Affairs Minister, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, on Tuesday.

She also encouraged those who will turn 16 in 2011 to also apply for their IDs.

"Officials in the department are working as hard as possible to ensure applications for IDs are processed expeditiously. We will also be intensifying our campaign to visit schools during which we will assist pupils who are 16 years and above to complete applications for their IDs," said Dlamini Zuma.

The minister added that an ID held the key to one's future. "It is required when you write your examinations, apply for further study or enter the job market. It is also essential when opening a bank account, applying for loans or acquiring assets."

A 24-hour call centre has been established to assist matriculants. The number is 0800 601190 or 0800 204476.
