Matrics inspired to 'be the miracle'

Soweto - As pressure and anxiety mounts on learners before the exams, Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane warned them not to expect miracles, but to apply what they have learned throughout the year.

"The only miracle is you. Taking your pen to the prophet will not help you. Apply what you've been studying for the past 12 years," Mokonyane told grade 12 learners at Thabo Senior Secondary School in Soweto.

Mokonyane, who was accompanied by Gauteng Education MEC Barbara Creecy and government officials, including members of faith-based organizations, visited learners to show matrics support and wish them luck.

Finals start on Monday. The Basic Education Department reported 642 691 pupils across the country have registered for the exams; 562 473 are full time candidates and 80 218 pupils are part time.

Mokonyane commended the class of 2010 for their perseverance during the year, which saw disruptions in learning due to the public sector strike.

"It's time to show them that you have accumulated the knowledge. We know you are determined to make us proud and destined for the best.

"[Revise] but don't put pressurize yourselves. We will continue to provide the necessary support. If you feel you can't cope, speak to those who can help you. Don't drop out when you have to take the now trophy - you've come too far," Mokonyane encouraged learners.

Creecy urged learners not to despair if things do not go the way they hope when the result are released next year. She said there were plenty of opportunities for them to try again.

"It's possible that on 6 January 2011, you won't be happy with what you've achieved. Whether you've failed [or not], you are still our child and there's still place for you. You can do supplementary exams," Creecy urged learners.

Secretary of the South African Council of Churches, Reverend Gift Moerane, prayed for learners and wishes them well.

"Be positive about what you are doing. Go and collect those As and with God and faith, you are going to make it. Talk to God to give you courage and make your country proud," said Moerane.

He also announced that all provincial churches will this Sunday dedicate the services to learners.
