Pretoria - With less than 49 days to go before the start of Grade 12 final exams, the Gauteng Education Department has urged learners to apply themselves with energy and dedication to the preliminary exams.

Gauteng Education spokesperson Charles Phahlane said most public schools in the province are expected to begin their prelims on 7 September, with a few schools to start this week.

He urged learners to set up small study groups to support each other with revision and take advantage of the different study groups and camps that offer matric support.

"The preliminary exams give learners an opportunity to experience first-hand questions they are likely to face in the forthcoming matric exams. Prelims also contribute to the school based assessment mark, which makes up 25% of the matric mark," Phahlane said.

He also encouraged learners to have sufficient rest the night before exams and have all the necessary material including calculators and pens. He advised them to read the entire question paper and instructions, and to plan their time carefully.

"We also encourage learners to verify their exam registration details. Learners with incorrect registration details will not be allowed to write."
