Pretoria – A mass funeral will be held this weekend for the nine people who died last Saturday during the deadly lightning strike in Nongoma, the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs said.
“All affected families have been duly approached and all of them have welcomed the support from the provincial government,” said KwaZulu-Natal Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC, Nomusa Dube-Ncube.
The mass funeral will take place on 21 February 2015 at Ngengeni Primary School in Mthonjaneni. The proceedings will start at 8:30am.
The provincial government will be represented at the funeral.
MEC Dube-Ncube said what happened in Nongoma has tested their capacity to deal with natural disasters and her department has emerged stronger from the experience.
“The department dispatched its dedicated staff to the scene of the disaster moments after the lightning strike and we did all we could to offer both instant and long-term disaster relief to the affected families and the entire community," said MEC Dube-Ncube.
She said the department’s disaster management teams remain on high alert as storms continue to lash the province with increasing intensity, wreaking havoc in communities.
She also assured the public that they are not facing these natural disasters without a helping hand from the provincial government.
“Our expert teams are working round the clock to assist the affected individuals and families.” – SAnews.gov.za
