Marking of matric papers almost complete

Tuesday, December 14, 2010

Pretoria - Except for a few minor glitches reported in some provinces, all is going well in the marking of matric papers, with the process expected to be completed in the next two days.

The marking of papers started three weeks ago, where more than 642 000, including 562 473 full time and 80 218 part time candidates, sat for the exams, which kicked off on 25 October 2010.

Gauteng Education spokesperson Charles Phahlane said since the start of the marking on 19 November, the process had been going well.

"We have had no incident whatsoever and the marking process is proceeding well and we are on schedule to complete on 15 December 2010," Phahlane said.

Limpopo is expecting to complete marking on 16 December 2010. "The marking of matric exam papers is going well in our province, we haven't had any challenge which could not be managed by our centre managers," said provincial department spokesperson Ndo Mangala.

No hurdles have been reported since the start of the marking of the papers in Limpopo. The marking is expected to be completed on 16 December 2010.

The national Department of Basic Education has dismissed calls for pupils who do not have English as their mother tongue to be marked more leniently. Some have said these pupils might be at a disadvantage because they cannot express themselves well in English.
