Mandela Centre of Memory opens its doors to the public

Saturday, December 7, 2013

Pretoria - The Nelson Mandela Foundation’s Centre of Memory has opened its doors to allow the public to reflect on the life and times of the late former President Nelson Mandela.

The centre will be open from 9am onwards from Saturday, 7 December to Monday, 9 December, as a place for people to gather in unity, chief executive of the foundation, Sello Hatang, said.

“With open arms, we welcome you into our home to pay your respects and share your tributes and contributions to recognising this great statesman,” said Hatang.

The centre, which is a public facility and a permanent exhibition on the life of Mandela, is situated in Houghton, Johannesburg.

“We would like to give the opportunity to people of all faiths and beliefs to pay homage,” said Hatang.

The opening of the centre comes as South Africans have hit to the streets to celebrate the life of the former President.

Crowds have gathered outside Madiba’s old home in Soweto to celebrate his life through song and dance.

The Nobel Walk, otherwise known as Vilakazi Street in Soweto, has been abuzz since the news of Mandela's death on Thursday night.

Celebrations of Madiba’s life have also been seen at Mandela’s Houghton home, where crowds started to gather from the early hours of the morning, singing struggle songs. - SAnews.gov.za
