Major heroin bust at Mozambique border

Thursday, January 4, 2018

A pedestrian has been arrested at the South Africa/Mozambique border post in Mpumalanga for trying to pass into the country with 3.6kg of heroin, estimated to be worth R3.6 million.

The woman was discovered with the drugs by South African Revenue Services’ customs officials, together with the detector dog unit, at the Lebombo border post on Wednesday.

“The incident happened when the [woman] with two backpacks was walking through the vehicle lane. Upon search, heroin was found concealed in false compartments with two plastic [bags] containing an off-white crystal like substance that reacted positive to tests,” said SARS in a statement on Thursday.

The goods were detained and handed over to South African Police Service for further investigation.

SARS said the successful operation was the result of cooperation between SARS and SAPS, who “remain committed to protecting the borders and facilitating legitimate trade”. – SAnews.gov.za
