Pretoria - Residents of Madiba village extension in Limpopo on Tuesday received electricity for the first time.
In a statement, Eskom said it takes its mandate to grant citizens of South Africa access to electricity seriously.
“On Tuesday, 450 households in Madiba village extension received electricity for the first time. These new connections form part of our commitment to fulfil that mandate,” it said.
The power utility said while electricity brings ease of life to those who are connected to it, people also have to recognise that if not treated correctly and with respect, electricity can be dangerous.
“It is with this in mind that Eskom continues to communicate with communities about the safe use of electricity. Such interventions take place at schools and community events around areas of newly electrified households.”
Eskom also urged its new customers to be on the lookout for illegal connections and perpetrators who temper with meters.
“These are criminal acts that rob communities of stable electricity supply. Should the community witness such acts, we urge them to send an SMS to crime line on 32211 to report them.”
For any other electricity related enquiries, the public can call the Eskom contact centre on 08600 37566. – SAnews.gov.za
