Deputy President David Mabuza has committed South Africa to supporting South Sudan in finding lasting peace, stability and development.
"South Africa working together with other leaders of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) countries will continue to provide support for a successful implementation of a peace agreement in South Sudan.
"I am particularly moved by the prevailing positive mood and level of optimism displayed by the signatories to the peace agreement and the Heads of State and Government as guarantors of this peace agreement,” Deputy President Mabuza said.
On Wednesday, the Deputy President who is also the Special Envoy to South Sudan concluded his working visit where he held consultations with Heads of State and Government in South Sudan, Sudan, Uganda and Kenya.
During his working visit, Deputy President Mabuza held bilateral discussions with President Slava Kiir Mayardit of South Sudan, President Omar al-Bashir of Sudan, President Yoweri Moseveni of Uganda and Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta.
While in Juba, the Deputy President also met with the leadership of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), the leadership of the South Sudan Opposition Alliance, the leadership of Former Detainees (FDs), the Convenors of the National Dialogue and members of the Diplomatic Corps.
The working visit by Deputy President Mabuza to South Sudan, Sudan, Uganda and Kenya provided a platform to mobilise all key stakeholders behind the commitment to implement the Revitalised Agreement on the Resolution of Conflict in the South Sudan, the Presidency said.
The country, which gained independence from Sudan in July 2011, has for several years been trapped in an unending civil war that has seen thousands killed and maimed, with millions more fleeing and displaced. – SAnews.gov.za
