Pretoria – Cabinet has approved the final recommendation of the Lotteries Policy and the Lotteries Amendment Bill, 2013, for submission to Parliament.
In a statement on Friday, Cabinet said the need to amend the Lotteries Act, Act No. 57 of 1997 followed an assessment of challenges that impede the effectiveness and efficiency in the distribution of funds.
The National Lotteries Board (NBL) will steer its funding programmes of non-governmental organisations towards the achievement of the goals stated in the National Development Plan, which seeks to eliminate poverty and reduce inequality by 2030.
The NBL, through the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund, distributes about R2 billion annually to various causes across the country.
These funds will continue to be channelled towards supporting worthy beneficiaries, but a key consideration will be the beneficiary’s alignment with broader national interests. – SAnews.gov.za
