Pretoria - The University of Johannesburg has warned that many of those who are currently inundating the institution to apply to be admitted to register for the 2011 academic year may not be accepted as there is limited space.
According to the university's formal enrolment plan, approved by the Department of Higher Education and Training, UJ may enrol 48 000 students in 2011 and this includes all undergraduate and postgraduate students. The university has already received 63 400 applications for 2011 first-year undergraduate studies.
"It is important to note that compliance with the minimum admission requirements does not guarantee a study place at UJ. Applications that are received during the dedicated application period receive preference for selection, conditional admission and placement in the relevant programme," said Professor Marie Muller, Registrar of the University of Johannesburg in a statement.
Professor Muller said the flood for late applications could be attributed to the number of National Senior Certificate holders in Gauteng that obtained university admission in the 2010 National Senior Certificate exams.
She explained that the university had been inundated with applicants that had applied in 2010 but were not admitted because their Grade 11 results did not comply with their admission requirements.
"Thousands of these applicants returned to the university, requesting admission as their Grade 12 results now do comply with our requirements. In addition to this, thousands of new applications for first year undergraduate studies have been submitted.
"All these applications will be exposed to a pre-selection process. If the applicant does comply with admission requirements and UJ has space in that particular programme, they will be informed accordingly," said Professor Muller.
The university's pre-selection is based on Grade 11 results and UJ conditionally admitted 17 500 applicants for first-year undergraduate studies subject to their final results and subject to space availability in the particular programme in accordance with the approved UJ Enrolment Plan.
This has already reflected a rejection of two thirds of the applications.
Registration of approved first-year students will take place from 24 to 28 January 2011.
