London - South African gold medallist Chad le Clos has pulled out of the men's 200m individual medley (IM) final.

According to media reports quoting the swimmers father, Bert le Clos, the decision was taken in order for him to focus on the 100m butterfly heats and potential semi-final race on Thursday.

Le Clos qualified for the 200m IM final on Wednesday night.

The Olympic hosts have finally claimed their first gold medals. Team Great Britain scooped two gold medals following a series of disappointments in the opening days of their home Games.

Helen Glover and Heather Stanning rowed to victory in the women's pair, in front of a home crowd of 25 000, including Princes William and Harry.

"It's so surreal, it will take forever to sink in," said Glover.

Cyclist Bradley Wiggins, fresh from his Tour de France triumph, won the cycling time trial.

Meanwhile, chief operating officer of the Badminton World Federation (BWF), Thomas Lund, has been answering questions on the disqualification of four women's doubles pairs.

They had been charged under BWF's Players' Code of Conduct. According to sections 4.5 and 4.6 of the code, "not using one's best efforts to win a match" and "conducting oneself in a manner that is clearly abusive or detrimental to the sport" will not be allowed.

The players disqualified include Wang Xiaoli and Yu Yang from China, Meiliana Jauhari and Greysia Polli from Indonesia, as well as Jung Kyung- Eun, Kim Ha-Na, Ha Jung-Eun and Kim Min-Jung, all from South Korea.

They are replaced by Valeria Sorokina/Nina Vislova from Russia, Michellle Edwards/Annari Viljoen from South Africa, Alex Bruce/Michele Li from Canada and Leanne Choo/Renuga Veeran from Australia.

Lund said they had called the disciplinary committee and reviewed the matches and got statements from the umpire and referee. "Players have been given a chance to explain this morning, and we gave sufficient time for the teams to appeal," he said.

The BWF received appeals from the South Korean and Indonesian pairs. But the Indonesians withdrew their challenge later and the appeal from South Korean was rejected.
