Last chance to register to vote - IEC

Friday, January 16, 2009

Johannesburg - Voters will have another two days to register to vote in the general elections taking place later this year, with registration stations opening on the weekend of 7 and 8 February.

It is the two last days that the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has set for people who did not get a chance to register last year, reports Joburg.org.

The stations will be set up in post offices, council offices, schools, community halls, and local parks. They will be used as voting stations next year.

According to Kate Bapela, the Chief Communications Officer at the IEC national office, the commission has doubled the number of stations to 19 713 "to make it easy for voters".

"Voters who have changed their physical addresses since the last elections, or people who have never been on the roll, can now register and have their voices heard.

"Those who qualify to register must do so in the area that they intend to vote - based on their physical home address.

"They have a chance to go at any time during office hours to local electoral offices in the municipal districts until the eighth, to register or check their voting status," said Ms Bapela.

However, she said, the opening time for the registration stations has not been confirmed yet.

Voter registration was also held on 8 and 9 November 2008. On those two days, 339 258 people registered on the voters' roll in Johannesburg, with 145 678 people registering for the first time.

There were 18 860 re-registrations in different voting districts, and 174 720 re-registrations in the same districts.

More than 3.6 million South Africans visited voter registration stations, either for the first time or to re-register, on that weekend in November.

A total of 1 648 189 new applications were received; 1 752 596 registered voters applied for registrations in new voting districts after moving; and 293 871 re-registered in the same voting districts as previously.

People in Johannesburg can find out where to register by calling the IEC on 0800 11 8000, or by checking for registration stations on the IEC website.

Voters can also ensure that the IEC has their correct details by sending an SMS with their ID number to 32810.

Only people who are 18 and older on the day of the elections are allowed to vote
