Pretoria – KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Arts and Culture, Bongiwe Sithole-Moloi, has joined the rest of South Africa in extending her condolences to the family, friends and fans of acting legend Joe Mafela, who died in a car accident on Saturday.
MEC Sithole-Moloi said that the untimely and sad passing of Mafela serves as an impetus to Amagugu Esizwe Tribute Campaign, which is a flagship programme initiated this year to honour and celebrate South African legends while they are still alive.
“Mafela’s immense contribution to the sector was unmissable. He brought entertainment to many of our homes for decades and formed part of the group of veterans who paved the way for young, black artists.
“He will most be remembered for his sense of humour and for his continued involvement in improving arts and culture in South Africa. We will keep his loved ones in our prayers,” said MEC Sithole-Moloi.
Mafela was an established actor, writer, producer, director, singer and businessman, who was celebrated in the industry. He took on numerous roles in productions during his career, starred in television commercials and released the popular hit Shebeleza.
He made his acting debut in 1964 when he appeared in the feature movie Real News. He starred in the isiZulu sitcom ‘Sgudi ‘Snaysi (colloquial for “it’s good, it’s nice”), in which he played the character of Sdumo. This sitcom became a major hit in its time.
Mafela was also part of the National Arts and Culture’s Living Legends Legacy Programme. – SAnews.gov.za
