Koeberg's Unit 2 returns to service

Monday, December 5, 2011

Pretoria - Unit 2 of the Koeberg power station has returned to service as repairs to the generator have been completed, Eskom said on Monday.

This comes after the unit was shut down at the end of October to conduct repairs to the generator, which is on the non-nuclear part of the power plant. It does not involve the reactor or nuclear fuel.

"The execution of the repairs to the generator required the unit to be completely shut down. The nuclear reactor was kept in a safe shutdown condition while the repairs were been undertaken," said the parastatal.

While repairs continued, unit 1 continued operating at full power with no interruption of electricity supply as a result of the shutting down of unit 2.

Eskom performs maintenance on the coal-fired stations during the summer months.
