Koeberg Unit 2 shut down

Tuesday, September 6, 2011

Pretoria - Unit 2 of the Koeberg power station has been shut down automatically, said Eskom.

The unit's automatic shutdown on Monday was triggered by the protection system on one of the motors due to either a mechanical or instrumentation failure.

"Eskom is investigating the cause of the fault. The shutdown of the unit was unrelated to the oil leak reported recently along the Atlantic Coast to the south of Koeberg," said the parastatal.

There was no interruption of electricity supply as a result of the shutdown of the unit.

"Koeberg Unit 1 remains fully operational. Eskom will make use of its open cycle gas turbines if needed to assist it to maintain an uninterrupted supply of power to the Western Cape." - BuaNews
