Joburg Metrobus resumes operations

Johannesburg - Metrobus has resumed services in Johannesburg after a recent strike by bus drivers over a salary dispute.

During the strike on Wednesday, some passengers were forced out of buses while the drivers, who were not part of the strike, were forced to join their striking colleagues.

According to Metrobus spokesperson Kenneth Kutu, the drivers together with their union representatives decided to suspend the strike.

"We are going to have a meeting with the drivers and their union representatives to see how best we can resolve the problem.

"We will try to avert the strike, hopefully there won't be other disruptions," Mr Kutu told BuaNews on Thursday.

According to Mr Kutu, the strike was illegal because the necessary procedures were not followed.

Last month, Metrobus drivers also went on a strike that left scores of commuters stranded in the south of Johannesburg.

Metrobus managing director Herman van Laar said at the time the reason for the strike was a result of "a small internal issue" that had since been resolved.

The strike began at the Village Main depot, but did not spread to other branches.
