Joburg metro police ready for Easter holiday

Pretoria - The City of Johannesburg’s Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) says it is ready to ensure safety over the Easter holiday.

Launching the Easter Safety Campaign, Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Public Safety Sello Lemao said the city is ready to sound its sirens.

The city promises greater police presence on the roads at on- and off-ramps, highways and around shopping malls.

“Easter is a critical period for the entire country and presents numerous safety challenges over this five-day period as people journey back and forth for religious and holiday purposes. JMPD and Emergency Management Services (EMS) must be ready to deal with various incidents,” Lemao said.

He said public support and cooperation, especially from motorists, are key in the success of interventions to prevent and reduce road fatalities.

He said travelling should be a well-planned, safe and calm event without the use of alcohol, which often “ends in disaster”.

“Emergency services are usually stretched to the limit and there may be delays in getting to call outs.

“Together with other medical and law enforcement agencies, there is a concerted effort to respond to crime and emergencies,” Lemao said.

He urged the public to heed the call for behavioural change to make the city a safe place for residents and visitors alike. - SAnews.gov.za
