Pretoria - The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is investigating the shooting that led to the death of one person, leaving three injured, at Cape Town International Airport.

It is alleged that a 37-year-old police constable from Lentegeur SAPS (Vispol) shot and wounded his partner and two other patrons at the Ocean Basket restaurant inside the airport on Wednesday.

The officer then shot himself in the head. He was certified dead at the scene.

According to IPID, the shooting incident is reported to have been sparked by an argument between the constable and his partner.

The policeman’s partner sustained a gunshot wound to the chest, while the other two victims were injured in the buttocks and leg respectively.

“IPID was notified and went to the scene. A preliminary investigation is underway to establish the circumstances of the incident,” said IPID.

The post-mortem on the dead policeman will be conducted today. - SAnews.gov.za
