Pretoria - Police are investigating the deaths of five people at the Alexandra Police Station, north of Johannesburg.
Four people were shot dead at the local police station by a police officer on Wednesday.
The shooting happened just after 6pm when a woman accompanied by two others went to the police station to open a domestic violence case against her 31-year-old police constable husband.
The husband then arrived at the station and opened fire and killed all three and the Major who was attending to the wife’s case.
The constable, who was off-duty at the time, was killed by police during a chase.
National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega and Gauteng Community Safety MEC Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane, who visited the scene last night, have sent their condolences to the families of the deceased.
Phiyega has also expressed shock over the incident, saying more attention was needed to issues related to domestic violence.
“Incidences such as these draw attention to the challenges we face on a daily basis in policing, also the importance of domestic violence, that as a society we need to give much attention to dealing with issues related to domestic violence. It is not an easy day for us as the South African Police Service.”
She said she will also look if security needs to be beefed up in police stations to prevent incidents like these, while counselling will be provided to the affected.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate is investigating the case and an inquest docket has been opened. - SAnews.gov.za
