International research conference to deepen SA-EU partnership

Pretoria – The International Conference on Research Infrastructure (ICRI) 2016 is a good platform to forge deeper partnerships between South Africa and the European Union, says Science and Technology Minister Naledi Pandor.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the signature of the South Africa-European Union Science and Technology Cooperation Agreement. The conference is hosted in partnership with the European Union.

Speaking at ICRI 2016, currently underway at the Cape Town Convention Centre, Minister Pandor said the conference is an appropriate recognition of the continent’s growing commitment to science and technology and participation in global research and innovation partnerships.

“It's fitting that our joint hosting of the ICRI will form part of this celebration.

“It's a perfect example of how South Africa and the European Union have joined forces over the years to advance global cooperation in science and technology, beyond our extensive bilateral cooperation,” Minister Pandor said.

She said cooperation with the European Commission in organising ICRI 2016 should cement the strategic partnership.

“I have no doubt that as we look forward to the next twenty years of South Africa-European Union cooperation in science and technology, ICRI 2016 will be the foundation for intensified and deepened partnerships… Let us not hesitate in exploiting the valuable role research infrastructures play in science diplomacy.

“South Africa is firmly committed to this objective and I would like to thank you for joining us in this cause,” she said.

Meanwhile, Minister Pandor will within the margins of ICRI launch South Africa’s first national Research Infrastructure Roadmap.
