Home Affairs set for local elections

Thursday, February 3, 2011

Pretoria - Home Affairs has reiterated its readiness to help ensure South Africans get IDs ahead of the local government elections.

Speaking in Pretoria, Minister Dlamini Zuma said: "The department, in implementing its National Population Register (NPR) campaign, is committed to ensuring that all South Africans are issued with IDs, since this enables our people to access basic services to which they are constitutionally entitled."

"In the context of the forthcoming local government elections, an ID becomes an increasingly important document that enables our people to exercise their democratic right to vote."

Home Affairs officers across the country will work extended hours on Friday, 4 February.

They will also work both on Saturday and Sunday, 5-6 February, across the country from 8am - 5pm to help those who want to apply for IDs to participate in the local government elections.

The department will also have mobile offices in the areas affected by floods and those without Home Affairs offices.

"Your vote is one way in which you can contribute to the creation of a better life for all South Africans," said Dlamini Zuma.
