Home Affairs to aid tornado victims

Pretoria - Home Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma has directed her department to put in place urgent measures to help victims of the recent tornado in Free State and Gauteng.

A tornado ripped through Duduza and Ficksburg on Sunday, killing two children and leaving many hurt and homeless.

The department will send mobile trucks, fitted with satellite facilities linked to Home Affairs services, to the affected areas.

The units will allows the department to provide affected residents with documents such as IDs, birth and marriage certificates. These documents will be provided at no cost, the department said.

According to the department, mobile units will be deployed to Ficksburg on Wednesday, where they will join the Department of Social Development and SA Social Security Agency in extending services to the community.

Plans for Gauteng will be announced later in the week.

Dlamini Zuma extended her condolences to those that had lost family members as a result of the tornado and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

"Our thoughts and prayers reach out to all those affected by the tornado in both the Free State and Gauteng provinces," she said.
