Pretoria - A man was shot and killed outside Builders Warehouse in Sunninghill early this morning in what is believed to be a botched robbery and hijacking.

According to media reports, four men attempted to hold up staff at the shop as it was opening for business. They demanded cash and valuables.

It is believed that as the robbers left the shop, they attempted to hijack the man who was waiting in his car but he resisted and one of the men shot him as he was trying to flee. He died at the scene.

Peak hour traffic in the area was brought to a standstill as police and emergency service attended to the scene.

Meanwhile, a small community in the Eastern Cape is still in shock following the brutal murders of two brothers over the weekend.

A night out for brothers David, 33, and Malcolm Wessels, 17, at a local watering hole called The Underground Tavern in Geluksdal, Graaff-Reinet, ended in tragedy early on Sunday morning when David was shot and died at the scene, and his teenage brother was shot in the head and later died in hospital.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Pierre Harmse said: "Our investigation into the double homicide led to the arrest of a 26-year-old man this morning. That's all we can say at the moment."

The suspect is due to appear in the Graaff-Reinet Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
