High-level meeting over DRC

Monday, October 8, 2018

Defence and Military Veterans Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula is in Kampala, Uganda, for a meeting aimed at discussing the peace and security situation in the DRC.

The 9th High-Level Meeting of the Regional Oversight Mechanism of the Peace, Security and Cooperation Framework for the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and the region is set to kick off this morning.

The High-Level Meeting will review the situation in the region and assess progress in the implementation of the commitments under the framework agreement and the decisions of the Eighth High-Level Meeting, the Ministry said on Monday.

Notably it will discuss the neutralisation of negative forces in eastern DRC and the repatriation of former combatants, as well as support to dialogue and political processes in the region.

South Africa is a signatory to the Peace, Security and Cooperation Framework (PSCF) Agreement signed in February 2013. The PSCF seeks to address the recurring cycles of conflict and violence in the eastern DRC.
