Pretoria- Traffic authorities were out in full force on Sunday to monitor traffic on the country's major roads as scores of people made their way home from various destinations after the long weekend.

Road Traffic Management Corporation spokesperson, Ashref Ismail, warned that law enforcement officials would be stationed at all major routes to monitor motorists' behaviour.

"We urge motorists to exercise patience because officers will be on guard to monitor things like drunk driving and excessive speeding," Ismail said.

He said while the roads were not expected to be too busy as schools were still closed, motorists using the N3 between Johannesburg and Durban, the N1 to Polokwane and the N1 to Cape Town, needed to be on high alert.

"We expect those routes to be busy towards the evening and it is the duty of all motorists using them to be alert and exercise patience at all times," he added.
