Hawks investigating Verulam bomb

Tuesday, May 15, 2018

The Hawks have confirmed that the device found inside the Imam Hussein Mosque in Verulam, KwaZulu-Natal, was indeed a bomb.

It’s understood that worshipers found a homemade white capsule with two wires connected to a cellphone, after concluding their evening prayers on Sunday.

“The incendiary device is a weapon designed to start fires, sometimes they are also called firebombs,” Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said on Monday.

The discovery of the device comes after three worshippers were attacked by unknown suspects, one of whom has passed on.

Mulaudzi said the motive of the attack is still unknown and no arrests have been made at this stage.

The Hawks together with SAPS Crime Intelligence and Detectives are seized with the matter.

A case of endangering life or property by means of burning has been added together with the murder and attempted murder cases by the investigating team, Mulaudzi said. - SAnews.gov.za
