Gungubele names new mayoral committee

Thursday, May 26, 2011

Pretoria - The retained executive mayor of Ekurhuleni Metro, Mondli Gungubele, announced his new mayoral committee when he was sworn in for the second term in office on Wednesday.

The new mayoral committee he announced will help him carry out the vision for the growth and development of the City in the next five-year term.

Gungubele said he had chosen a calibre of councillors with a demonstrable capacity to lead as a collective, engage constructively and frequently with relevant stakeholders, and to collaborate for the benefit of the metro.

The new mayoral committee is constituted in such a way that it puts emphasis on the areas of priority for the City.

The Infrastructure Services portfolio has been unbundled into three branches; Water and Energy; Roads and Storm Water; and Public Transport Planning and Provision.

The Corporate Services portfolio now reports directly to Gungubele and is managed day-to-day by the City Manager because, in the Executive Mayor's own words, "Issues of Human Resource, Information Communication Technology (ICT) and customer relationship management should not have to be unnecessarily politicised as they talk to the efficiency of the City."

The councilors, who will be serving as Members of the Mayoral Committee (MMCs) for the term of office 2011 to 2016, are: Queen Duba (Human Settlements), Aubrey Nxumalo (Water and Energy), Mthuthuzeli Siboza (Community Safety), Zeni Tshongweni (Sport, Heritage, Recreation, Arts and Culture).

Bernard Nikani (City Planning and Economic Development), Tilly Vuyelwa Mabena (Environmental Development), Khosi Maluleke (Health and Social Development), Moses Makwakwa (Finance), Phelisa Nkunjana (Roads and stormwater) and Thumbu Mahlangu (Public Transport, Planning and Provision).

Patricia Kumalo was re-elected Speaker of Council, while Robert Mashego was made the new Chief Whip of Council.
