Monday, February 21, 2011

Pretoria - Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe will visit the Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipality in the North West on 25 and 26 February to assess progress of the government's War on Poverty programme.

The War on Poverty campaign is a means to intervene in the country's poorest communities to improve South Africans' quality of life at grass root level.

The North West launched its provincial campaign in Greater Taung Local Municipality in 2008.

Using data from Statistics South Africa, the campaign targets poor wards to bring about better coordination among all levels of governance in the fight against poverty.

The Deputy President will be accompanied by national ministers, the premier of the province Thandi Modise and members of the Executive Council.

The visit will afford the Deputy President a chance to meet with the North West provincial leadership. He will pay personal visits to poor households. A community meeting is expected to be held in Manthe village in the Greater Taung local municipal area.
