Govt concerned by rhino poaching figures

Pretoria - A total of 171 rhinos have been killed between January and April this year, the Department of Environmental Affairs has announced.

It said it was perturbed by the continuous loss of rhinos through illegal killings.

According to statistics, rhino poachers are targeting the Kruger National Park which has suffered a loss of 103 rhinos.

Limpopo, KwaZulu-Natal and the North West - which collectively account for 58 killed rhinos - are also the prime focus of the poachers. These provinces have lost 23, 18 and 17 rhinos, respectively.

Another 10 rhinos were killed in other parts of the country.

The department reiterated its call for South Africans to report incidents of rhino poaching or any tip-offs that could lead to arrest and prevention of illegal killing to 0800 205 005.
