Pretoria – Government has reiterated the call for faith-based organisations and society at large to hold prayer services across the country on Sunday, to reflect on and celebrate the life of former President Nelson Mandela.
President Jacob Zuma declared Sunday a National Day of Prayer and Reflection following the passing away of former President Nelson Mandela on Thursday evening.
Yesterday, the President urged people “to gather in halls, churches, mosques, temples, synagogues and in their homes for prayer services and meditation, reflecting on the life of Madiba and his contribution to our country and the world”.
Acting GCIS CEO Phumla Williams said: “As we enter this mourning period, South Africans are urged to unite and reflect on the life and vision of Madiba. The father of the nation served our country and the world with distinguished dignity and we will forever remain indebted to him.”
“Government wishes to acknowledge the messages of love and support coming from different parts of the country and the world. We thank you for keeping our young nation in your thoughts and prayers during this trying time,” said Williams.

On Tuesday, a memorial service will be held at FNB stadium in Johannesburg. Tens of thousands of mourners as well as dignitaries and Heads of State are expected to gather for the event. – SAnews.gov.za
