Boksburg – The Deputy Minister of Human Settlements, Zoe Kota-Fredericks, has warned developers in the social housing sector to deliver quality housing.

The Deputy Minister was addressing the Social Housing Regulatory Authority’s annual corporate engagement on Tuesday in Boksburg.

She said shoddy work would endanger the lives of those living in the homes intended for low to middle income earners.

South Africa has a booming social housing sector, which is meant to transform the legacy of apartheid spatial planning. Deputy Minister Kota-Fredericks said stakeholders must not rest until towns and cities are transformed spatially, socially and economically.

The annual social housing corporate engagement brought together stakeholders in the sector to discuss how to develop a thriving social housing sector.

The SHRA was established in August 2010 by the Human Settlements Minister, as per the Social Housing Act, No 29 of 1999 (PFMA). It is State subsidised rental housing targeted at low to medium income groups.

Deputy Minister Kota-Fredericks said government demand for affordable rental stock is 320 000 units. – SAnews.gov.za
