Government calls for more talks between UKZN, students

Pretoria – The Department of Higher Education and Training has urged management at the University of KwaZulu-Natal to resume engagements with the student leadership and ensure that no party withdraws until they find a solution to the protest action there.

The academic programmes at all campuses were suspended on Thursday as a protest by students turned violent. Students are reportedly unhappy about the draft loans and bursary policy, among other things.

The department on Monday said it was in the best interests of the management, as well as the students, that priority be given to the normalisation of the academic process.

Strike action could not resolve the issues and parties should focus on dialogue.

The department also condemned the damage to property, saying no amount of anger and frustration can justify the act of vandalising public property which belongs to future generations. – SAnews.gov.za
