Pretoria - The Zimbabwean couple, who allegedly attempted to smuggle in R6 million worth of gold bricks through Musina’s Beit Bridge border post on Friday afternoon, has appeared in court.

The suspects, a 39-year-old man and his 37-year-old wife, appeared briefly at Musina Magistrate Court today and their case was remanded to next week Monday, pending further police investigations, according to police spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi.

No bail was granted.

The couple was arrested on Friday after a dog handler from SARS, who was doing his routine inspection, spotted the suspicious looking black vehicle they were travelling in.

“The inspector requested to search the vehicle and found a parcel wrapped with a black plastic bag, which was hidden inside the armrest compartment of the passenger seat. He immediately informed the police, who then found out that inside the plastic were six bricks of gold, with an estimated value of R6 million,” Mulaudzi said.

They are facing charges of unlawful possession of precious metal. – SAnews.gov.za
