Pretoria - Western Cape Provincial Commissioner General Arno Lamoer and three brigadiers have been suspended with pay, police have confirmed.
This after Lamoer and some of his officers were criminally charged last week.
Lamoer and several of his top provincial police officials appeared in the Goodwood Magistrate’s Court last Friday where they faced a total of 109 charges related to racketeering and money laundering.
The next step, according to SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant General Solomon Makgale, is an internal disciplinary inquiry in line with South African Police Services (SAPS) prescripts.
The investigation will be conducted by independent persons sourced from the Safety and Security Sectoral Bargaining Council panel of experts, Makgale said.
“In the case of the three brigadiers, should the investigation find that there is a case to be answered to, then charges will be formulated and a presiding officer will be appointed to chair the disciplinary hearings,” said Makgale.
In the case of Lamoer, should the investigation find that there is a case to answer to, then a Board of Inquiry will be constituted in line with the provisions of the South African Police Service Act, to make recommendations on their findings to the National Commissioner, Makgale said. - SAnews.gov.za
