Gauteng youth encouraged to register to vote

Sunday, February 16, 2014

Pretoria - The Gauteng Executive Council (Exco) has called on young people who have not yet registered to vote in the upcoming national and provincial general elections, to do so before the date is published in the Government Gazette.

President Jacob Zuma announced 7 May 2014 as the election date, but he has not yet proclaimed the date, meaning the voters’ roll is still open.

The weekend of 8 and 9 February was the last registration drive by the Independent Electoral Commission, although voter registration will continue until the date of the official proclamation by the President.

“Registration remains open to eligible voters until 5pm on the day of proclamation, which is expected to be later this month,” said Premier Nomvula Mokonyane.

She held a cabinet meeting earlier this week.

The Exco emphasised that potential voters must make an appointment to apply for registration at their local IEC office during office hours. They should phone first to make an appointment.

Mokonyane said as part of the build-up activities to the elections, the provincial government would embark on a voter education drive in April.

The education drive will include on-the-ground campaigns with communities, partners and strategic stakeholders to promote and increase knowledge and understanding of the 2014 elections. – SAnews.gov.za
