Gauteng Premier condemns Eldorado Park murder

Thursday, April 3, 2014

Pretoria - Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane has condemned the murder and rape of a woman whose body was found near a school in Eldorado Park, south of Johannesburg.

"We are shocked and dismayed as this crime takes place as we intensify the war against drug abuse and related social ills, not only in Eldos but throughout the Gauteng province," she said.

The 27-year-old woman’s body was found by a passer-by near a school on Wednesday.

"The brutal murder and rape of this young woman shows that we still have a long way to go in defeating the monster of drug abuse that is affecting the Eldorado Park community," said the premier.

She commended the police for their swift action in apprehending five suspects.

“However, we urge law enforcement agencies to ensure that they put together a water-tight case against the alleged perpetrators of this heinous crime so that they are locked away for a long, long time," Premier Mokonyane said.

She said the province, working with the Local Drug Action Committee and other Non-Profit Organisations and the religious sector in the area, will continue to take the battle against drug abuse to dealers and kingpins.

Premier Mokonyane said the province "would not allow criminals to undermine the many gains women have achieved in the last 20 years of democracy".

She conveyed her condolences to the woman’s family.
