Pretoria - High school learners across Gauteng will get the opportunity of a life time when they start a new Learner Driver Support Project (LDSP) next year.

The project is expected to provide them with their learner's licence and driver training to produce competent drivers.

The provincial Department of Roads and Transport in partnership with the Department of Education and Community Safety will officially launch the LDSP in Pretoria next Wednesday.

"The LDSP is aimed at ensuring that we have better drivers on our roads and that we are providing a service which is deemed to be highly required in our community. The main focus of this project is on school learners, who are not in a possession of a driver's licence," said departmental spokesperson, Philemon Motshwaedi.

The initiative is geared towards promoting a culture of road safety through understanding the road rules and encouraging appropriate behaviour on the road, before acquiring a drivers' licence.

At the launch, MEC for Roads and Transport, Bheki Nkosi will present in detail, the objectives of the project which includes to prepare high school learners to obtain learners' and drivers' licences.

The project will assist learners to acquire licences and to instill a culture of road safety at critical level of learner development.

It will also create road safety awareness through education of road safety rules and enable learners to be economically active post matriculation.
