Pretoria – Four senior officials from the Gauteng Health Department have been suspended following fraud allegations within the Medical Supply Depot (MSD).

The four senior officials, including a Chief Director, two Directors and one Deputy Director, were served with letters of precautionary suspension from the department on Tuesday.

According to the department, the four were suspended following intensive investigations, led by the Office of the Premier, against those suspected of misconduct in its MSD operations.

“They are suspended with full pay and were given an opportunity to make statements on why they should not be suspended. Charges have already been prepared as the department is ready to commence with disciplinary hearings,” said Health MEC Hope Papo.

Papo said the Health Minister was serious about “exorcising the rot in the department”, and he has asked his staff to ensure that the process for disciplinary hearings commences soon.

“We do not want to have suspended people receiving full pay while sitting at home," said Papo. – SAnews.gov.za
